About Covenant Christian Reformed Church

When you Worship with Us...

You come to God's house at God's invitation to worship and to dialogue with Him. He speaks to us through His Word and we respond.  His Holy Spirit directs us to Jesus, the focus of our worship.

For this reason we think each member should come faithfully to church to give and receive Christian fellowship.  When we worship together we enjoy the strength and solidarity of the communion of saints.  As sons and daughters of God we are brothers and sisters to each other.  We are God's family meeting in our Father's house.

You will notice that the pulpit is in the center, for on it is the Bible, God's Word.  From the pulpit, the minister speaks for God to the people and, in prayers, for the people to God.  The symbols of the Christian sacraments--the table for the Lord's Supper and the baptismal font for Holy Baptism--are below or to the side of the pulpit, for these sacraments are visible signs of the salvation we have in Christ, but subordinate to the Word.  In the Lord's supper we eat bread and drink grape juice, which symbolize the body and blood of Christ, shed to cleanse us from our sins.  The water of baptism symbolizes the washing away of our sins in the blood of Christ.

In our worship, you will usually recognize these components in the dialogue: the people sing praise to God, they invoke His blessing and presence, ("our help is in the name of the Lord"), the Lord greets His people, the people confess their sin, the Lord assures His people that they are forgiven, the people express thanks (Gloria Patri), the Lord summons His people to a new life of obedience (the Law), the people dedicate themselves (usually by singing), the people pray that the Lord will enlighten them through His Word, the Lord speaks by way of the sermon (the pastor explains what some passage from the Bible means for our daily lives), the people respond by praising God for blessings (sharing joys), and pleading for healing or for the working of the Holy Spirit in the lives of loved ones (sharing concerns,) the people respond by giving an offering for the Lord's work and perhaps with a song of dedication, the Lord gives his blessing (the benediction).

Our church celebrates the Lord's Supper the first Sunday of each month.  April's celebration is at a Maundy Thursday service.

We believe that our only hope of salvation from sin lies in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  When we celebrate the Lord's supper, and testify to this faith, we invite all Christians who share this faith with us to celebrate with us.  But you should not do so unless you sincerely repent of your sins and intend to serve God and obey his will for your life.  Otherwise you dishonor God and in essence trivialize this sacrament.

Though never satisfactorily thanking God for the gift of His Son through whom we are saved, we try to obey God's law: to love Him with all our heart, soul, and mind, and our neighbors as ourselves.  We pray that you may feel that love each day.
